About Studio BL
In the head of a sunflower or a pine cone lies a mathematical pattern that has fascinated biologists and mathematicians for centuries: spiral phyllotaxis. It is the basis of Bastiaan Luijk's work.
Bastiaan trained as an architect at TU Delft and has worked as Studio BL from Leiden since 2019. Vogel's formula (1979) describes the pattern in a flat plane. Bastiaan developed algorithms that apply it as a constructive principle in three dimensions. He designs parametrically in Rhino 3D and Grasshopper, and what he designs for 3D printing, he prints and assembles himself. "I like to share my wonder at the beauty of nature, by enlarging it, bringing it closer and letting it be appreciated in a new way."
Everything he prints is made from recycled or renewable material. Many of the lamps are printed in PHA, a bioplastic produced by bacteria. The joints of the Luzon shelving unit are recycled PETG. For Luzon he works with Circulair Warenhuis in Leiden, which makes the boards from discarded furniture.
His work has been shown at Milan Design Week (2023 and 2024), Dutch Design Week (2022-2026), and many other venues in The Netherlands. Since 2021 Bastiaan is a member of Galerie Zône in Leiden, where his work is shown permanently.
