Collection: Baguio Table Lamp

Baguio is a 3D-printed table lamp: a sphere with a fine-meshed spiral pattern and a reflective light source at its heart. Choose from four sizes and six different colors.

What you see

From the inside out, you see three layers. In the center is the opening you look through yourself, reflected as a dark pupil. Around that is the inner wall of the sphere with its pattern: the iris. You see those two layers in daylight and in the dark. The third layer only appears when the lamp is on: a ring of light, reflecting off the inside of the diffuser.

What you see in it is up to you.

Material is a choice of light

The material of the sphere determines how the light enters the room.

Wood. A composite of PLA and PHA with recycled wood fibers. The light also passes through the wall, causing the entire sphere to glow softly. It looks like light pine on the outside. Available in 14, 21, and 28 cm.

Black and ecru. PHA, a bioplastic produced by bacteria. With black, the light only exits through the openings, creating a sharp contrast between the sphere and the light. Ecru lets through the most light of all the colors. Available in 14, 21, and 28 cm.

Ochre yellow, sage green, and dusty pink. Recycled PLA. Sage green lets through the most light after ecru. These three colors are also available in 35 cm.

A different color? Upon request, I can print Baguio in any size in a color of your choice, in PLA or PETG, new or recycled, for an additional charge. Feel free to contact me.

Pattern and design

In the head of a sunflower and in a pine cone, the seeds and scales lie in interlocking spirals: spiral phyllotaxis. Vogel’s formula (1979) describes that pattern on a flat plane.

Between 2019 and 2021, I developed an algorithm that allows the spiral phyllotaxis pattern to flow across a self-defined shape with mathematical precision, without interruptions or seams. I developed the form and the algorithm in parallel, using physical 3D-printed test models to guide the process. Baguio is the first design that was ultimately refined into a product.

I printed the first spheres with a thick wall. They allowed little light through, and printing took a long time. With a larger nozzle, I was able to print the sphere in one continuous spiral: faster, in higher quality, and with new details such as the scale-like openings you see now.

In 2021, I exhibited the first Baguio at Galerie Zône in Leiden. Since then, I have improved the construction, particularly the connection between the lamp holder and the sphere, and added new materials.

Which size fits?

The 14 and 21 cm models look great on a windowsill, nightstand, desk, in a cupboard, or on a side table. The 28 and 35 cm models look better on a cabinet, on the floor, or on a larger table. On a nightstand, every size provides enough light for reading.

Made in Leiden

I print every Baguio myself in Leiden, to order. The diffuser and the base are made of PHA. Because I make every part myself, I can also replace them.
