Following a successful joint exhibition in 2022, textile designer Mariëtte Wolbert, furniture designer and maker Frida van der Poel, and designer-maker Bastiaan Luijk are showcasing their collaborative projects and individual work again this year. In addition to this work, we have curated a number of guest exhibitors: a mix of craft work by interior architect Karel Bodegom, 3D paper artists Khalid and Rachid Zerrou, and blacksmith-artist Annelied van Dijk.

Messmerizing
"A curated space, set up as a total experience. We combine the space and its architectural forms with unique collector's items and scenography on the border of design & art. A mini-district, 2 floors as a nomad gallery & livingspace, with a surreal feeling"

Have entered into a collaboration for the product presentation of Messmerizing 2023, based on wonderful technology with special properties.
How can we make heat visible when the flame is extinguished? How do we show that the heater is on?

BioArt Laboratories
Bastiaan Luijk of Studio BL, as a participant in the Summer Pilot of the Academie van Leiden, has taken two courses: Concept Development with instructor Iede Reckman and Public Space with instructor Maarten Slof. Both final projects have been selected to be shown during the DDW23 exhibition Down to Earth by BioArt Laboratories.

Transitory perspective: seeing the forest for the trees again
On this open spot in the woods, new trees are being planted as part of the regeneration of the Nieuw Leeuwenhorst estate. The work is an interpretation of the balance between natural and artificial forest regeneration. A spatial experience where you, as a visitor, can move freely and get lost, thereby discovering a new perspective on the location and the forest.
The core structure of the work is based on the spiral phyllotaxis pattern, visible in the heads of sunflowers, for example. Poles stand at every coordinate of this pattern. They are crafted from trees that once stood on this spot but have made way to increase biodiversity.
The height of the poles gradually increases, eventually rising above every visitor. This creates a constantly changing perspective. The man-made structure slowly flows into the natural structure of the forest. The pole structure gradually transitions into new and existing trees.
Over time, nature takes over the structure and the original pattern fades until it is almost unrecognizable. The work becomes one with the surrounding forest and visitors experience only the primordium: seemingly random, but the first cells of an invisible beauty.
Format: scale model 1:100, dimensions: 64x57x23 cm (lxwxh)

Space for spaciousness: a jewel for the city
A process of looking differently, seeing the city with new eyes. The beauty of everyday (im)perfections. Recording, abstracting, reinterpreting, giving back.
Format: 24x24x24cm
Technique: 3D printing
Material: Bio-composite with flax and PLA
About the Academie van Leiden
The Academie van Leiden sees art and culture as indispensable capital for an open and democratic society. There, artists formulate and investigate ideas and circumstances that contribute to social, technological, biological, and philosophical issues. The Academie van Leiden aims to be a place where artistry can be developed. Searching for a new balance between the earth, its inhabitants, and the innovative structures and ideas to support that, as described by Glenn Albrecht as the Symbiocene, is the inspiration for the curriculum. The Academie van Leiden is not accredited. The word 'academie' refers to the free conduct of research and the exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Design Rides
"The recognizable Design Rides are an indispensable part of Dutch Design Week. For nine days, 35 Design Rides will drive through Eindhoven, transporting an estimated 60,000 visitors to and from every DDW location in 18,000 rides. All Design Rides are fitted with a special object on the roof, designed and made by a DDW participant. The Design Rides and the designs on the roof will be visible throughout the city for nine days."

We are proud to say that our submitted design has been approved. The design is a cluster of Krk Mounted objects: a new design wall and ceiling lamp that will be launched during Dutch Design Week. The colors of the Krk Mounted objects are based on the Coral theme as applied in the work of Mariëtte Wolbert.
The Krk Mounted Design Rides project was made possible in part by Reflow Filaments:
"Reflow is an award winning social enterprise, dedicated to tackling plastic pollution while creating innovative, scalable, design and manufacturing solutions. We believe that the best way to tackle a complicated problem is to come at it from every possible angle. So we’ve assembled a pack of eccentric and talented humans from every discipline and corner of the globe. Together, we are sincerely motivated and united by the same great idea. Turning the plastic problem into a creative opportunity."
Thanks to the generous contribution of recycled filament by Reflow Filament, this project has become feasible.
